Hackerman Hall Dedicated

Fall 2010

hackermanWith an explosion of confetti and a trumpet’s flourish, the Whiting School’s newest research incubator, Hackerman Hall, was dedicated on September 15, 2010.

Named in recognition of a lifetime of philanthropic support of Johns Hopkins and the Whiting School of Engineering by alumnus Willard Hackerman ’38, the building (formerly the Computational Science and Engineering Building) houses some of the school’s most innovative research programs, including the Institute for Computational Medicine, the Center for Language and Speech Processing, and the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics.

The joyous celebration brought together leadership from across the university, engineering faculty, the Hackerman Scholars (graduates of Mr. Hackerman’s high school alma mater, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute), and many of Willard and Lillian Hackerman’s family and friends.

“Just as Mr. Whiting was a gift to you, Mr. Hackerman, you were a gift to me, and it is my only dream that one day I will be in a position to be a gift to many, many others.”

— Britni Lonesome ’10, a Hackerman Scholar, who spoke at the dedication of Hackerman Hall. Having earned her BS in chemical and biomolecular engineering last spring, she is now enrolled in the Whiting School’s master’s program in engineering management.
