2003 Distinguished Alumnus Award

 Theodore A. “Ted” Bickart ’57, ’60 PhD

Theodore A. “Ted” Bickart ’57, ’60 PhD is considered a foremost authority on engineering education with expertise in international education. In 2000, Bickart retired as the 14th president of the Colorado School of Mines. He previously served as dean of Michigan State University’s College of Engineering. His 26 years at Syracuse University included serving as dean of Engineering, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and on the electrical engineering faculty. A Fulbright Scholar at Kiev Polytechnic Institute in the USSR, he also was a visiting professor at the Nanjing Institute of Technology in China.

Bickart is a member of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education. In 2001, he was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, which honors extraordinary individuals who spent part of their academic careers at Hopkins. Bickart resides in Colorado with his wife, Frani.

Lewis G. “Lew” Miller, ’57, ’61 PhD

Lewis G. “Lew” Miller, ’57, ’61 PhD is an exceptional alumnus of the Whiting School of Engineering and the Johns Hopkins University. He has served on the Alumni Association’s Alumni Council, the National Alumni Schools Committee (NASC), and the Society of Engineering Alumni (SEA). His service to the SEA has included several officer positions; he served as regional coordinator and secretary prior to assuming his current post as vice chair.

Miller established and chaired Hopkins’ Fort Lauderdale alumni chapter and later chaired the Southeast Florida alumni chapter. Currently co-chair of the Southeast Florida chapter, he has been instrumental in organizing events of interest to alumni from across all Hopkins Institutions. His involvement in the Class of 1957 35th and 45th Reunion Committees led to highly successful events. He continues to be active in reunion activities and the NASC, as well as in a number of pro bono activities in his community.

Miller and his wife, Leilani, created the Lewis G. and Leilani Miller Endowment for Engineering Initiatives within the Whiting School to help the dean meet the School’s highest priorities. Miller resides in Boca Raton and is retired from IBM.
