Background

Oil droplets in the ocean will experience turbulence. Turbulence acts to break up these droplets.

Goals

This project aims to measure the effect of turbulence and oil properties on turbulence dispersion rate, and to investigate the role of dispersants in creating micro-droplets.

Facility

Spinning grids create isotropic turbulence in the center of the tank. Oil droplets are injected into the sample volume of size 17 x 17 x 70 mm3. High-speed inline digital holographic cinematography is used to visualize these droplets.
