Background
A jet or plume of oil released in the ocean will experience shear at its boundaries as it moves through the water. If the shear is great enough, the interface will become unstable, and mixing of water and oil will occur.
Facility
Shear layer facility will provide a controlled planar shear flow to visualize interface, in which flow speed of fluids is controllable. Re-assembly is currently in progress. Expected completion date of the facility is Winter 2013.

The project aims to study the fundamental mechanisms of instability in a stratified oil-water shear layer and to investigate the entrainment rate and droplet size distribution of oil and water droplets.
