Postdoctoral Fellow

Abhishek Gupta
Ph.D. Material Science, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi India, 2017

Abhishek joined the Hall lab in May 2023. Before attending Hopkins, Abhishek did his first postdoc at the Zuckerberg Institute of water research, Israel in the research area of laser-assisted graphene fabrication for water purification and desalination. His Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology, India was focused on graphitic carbon nanomaterials for fluorescence sensing. His current work is based on synthesizing intermetallic and high-energy alloys for catalytic applications. Abhishek likes to travel and cook food in his free time.

Ph.D. Students

Tianyao (Ty) Gong

B.E. Materials Science and Engineering, Beihang University, 2017
M.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Columbia University, 2019

Before joining the Hall lab in 2019 fall, Ty worked on the synthesis & morphology control of nano-sized amorphous materials and engineering the interfaces within solid-state lithium-ion batteries. As for now, his research focuses on phase transformation under electrochemical dealloying in intermetallic alloy systems and electrocatalytic performances. In his free time, Ty likes playing tennis, having jam sessions with friends, and re-watching and quoting the TV show “Friends” (already over 10 times for all 236 episodes).

Hao (Nick) Zhang

B.S. Chemical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 2018
NSF Graduate Research Fellow

Prior to attending Hopkins, Nick was a research fellow at Berkeley and Brookhaven National Labs, working on bioimaging and Li-ion battery research projects, respectively. He joined the Hall group in Fall 2020 as a Ph.D. student. He is currently investigating the effect of ionic liquids on electrocatalytic performance. He aims to investigate the electrolyte interface and reaction intermediates with a combination of characterization techniques. In his free time, Nick enjoys standup paddling, hiking, baking, and traveling.

Jiaxin (Jax) Gao

E-mail: [email protected]

B.S. Chemistry, Sun Yat-sen University, 2018
M.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, 2021

Jiaxin joined Hall research group as a masters student in Fall 2019. His research interests include CO2/CH4 conversion and nanomaterials. Outside the lab, Jiaxin will be cooking and karting.

Baichuan (Anson) Guo

B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, University of California, Davis, 2020
M.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, 2023

Baichuan(Anson) joined Hall group as a master student in Fall 2021. His research interest involves in synthesizing novel materials using electrochemical deposition for CO2 reduction reactions. In his spare time, Anson enjoys working out in the gym.

Jiaqi Zuo

B.S. Petroleum Engineering, Yangtze University, 2020
M.S. Chemical Engineering, New York University, 2023

Jiaqi Zuo joined the Hall group in Fall 2023 as a Ph.D. student. Prior to enrolling at Hopkins, her academic pursuits encompassed the domains of Enhanced Oil Recovery and the development of Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodetectors. During her leisure time, she takes pleasure in playing the Guzheng (a Chinese Zither), guitar, piano, and drum set. Additionally, she enjoys working out and traveling. Art museums and oceanside hold special significance for her as places of comfort.

Undergraduate Student

Yahaira (Yaya) Mejia

B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, 2025

Yahaira joined the Hall group in the spring of 2023 as an undergraduate research assistant. She is currently working under Ty Gong, aiding in the research of electrochemical dealloying in intermetallic alloy systems and their performance. During her free time, Yahaira enjoys rock climbing, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with her friends.
