Advocacy (ESSA) helps students navigate non-Academic issues including mental or physical health, interpersonal issues, conflict with advisors, financial concerns, time management, leaves of absence, being victimized, and family emergencies.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;About Engineering Student Support &amp; Advocacy (ESSA)&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23012e5b&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]Engineering Student Support &amp; Advocacy (ESSA) is a group of Case Managers who provide outreach and support for students with significant and complex concerns that affect their academic and personal success.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]ESSA works with students navigating non-academic issues to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>highlight their personal strengths\/self-advocacy skills,<\/li>\n<li>increase their access to resources, and to<\/li>\n<li>help them navigate challenges that might impede their goals of success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Case Managers work with students who may need to take a Leave Of Absence for physical health, psychological reasons, or other personal emergencies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ESSA does not provide counseling or therapy.<\/strong> Rather, Case Managers have the opportunity to develop close helping relationships with students while coaching them toward appropriate self-care and self-advocacy.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5320&#8243; We want to support students&#8217; agency in making decisions that are best for them. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESSA abides by privacy guidelines under the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/registrar.jhu.edu\/ferpa-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA)<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">This dictates that University staff cannot share any student information with anyone who is not a university employee, including parents, without the student\u2019s written permission. Case managers only share information on a need-to-know basis. This allows case managers to speak with a student\u2019s academic advisor, financial aid counselor or other university official on the student\u2019s behalf.
