Throughout the school year, students complete engaging, inquiry-based STEM projects. Partway through the year, classes break away from the structured curriculum to work on Student Driven Projects, during which students identify an area for improvement in their local community and use STEM in order to address it. For example, afterschool SABES students at Barclay Elementary\/Middle School developed a mini-irrigation system to provide clean water to their school garden for their 2018 project.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the afterschool instructors, mentors (STEM professionals, retirees, JHU\u00a0faculty, staff, post docs, graduate and undergraduate students) visit the afterschool program regularly to encourage the students, ask questions and share their own passion for and path to a STEM career.<\/p>\n<p>SABES afterschool curriculum features engineering design challenges in each unit. In order to complete the design challenges, students utilize the Engineering Design Process, as developed by the Museum of Science, Boston<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Engineering Design Process, much like the scientific method, guides students through the steps necessary for solving a problem or answering a question using science and engineering. The five steps of the Engineering Design Process used in SABES &#8211; as well as\u00a0questions to ask and actions to complete for each step\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0are as follows:<\/p>\n    <div class=\"tabbable\">\n          <ul class=\"nav nav-tabs\">\n            <li class=\"active\">\n        <a href=\"#tbs_nav_item_0\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Ask<\/a>\n      <\/li>\n              <li class=\"\">\n        <a href=\"#tbs_nav_item_1\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Imagine<\/a>\n      <\/li>\n              <li class=\"\">\n        <a href=\"#tbs_nav_item_2\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Plan<\/a>\n      <\/li>\n              <li class=\"\">\n        <a href=\"#tbs_nav_item_3\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Create and Test<\/a>\n      <\/li>\n              <li class=\"\">\n        <a href=\"#tbs_nav_item_4\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Improve<\/a>\n      <\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n          <div class=\"tab-content\">\n          <div id=\"tbs_nav_item_0\" class=\"active tab-pane\">\n<ul>\n<li>What is the problem?<\/li>\n<li>What have others done before?<\/li>\n<li>What are the constraints?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n        <div id=\"tbs_nav_item_1\" class=\"tab-pane\">\n<ul>\n<li>What are some solutions?<\/li>\n<li>Brainstorm ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the best idea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n        <div id=\"tbs_nav_item_2\" class=\"tab-pane\">\n<ul>\n<li>Draw a diagram.<\/li>\n<li>List materials needed for design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n        <div id=\"tbs_nav_item_3\" class=\"tab-pane\">\n<ul>\n<li>Follow your plan and create the design.<\/li>\n<li>Test<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n        <div id=\"tbs_nav_item_4\" class=\"tab-pane\">\n<ul>\n<li>Identify strengths and weaknesses (what worked and what didn\u2019t work).<\/li>\n<li>Modify your designs to make it better.<\/li>\n<li>Test it again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n          <\/div>\n          <\/div>\n    \n<p>After students improve upon their first design, they may want to begin the Engineering Design Process all over again to refine their technology, or they may want to focus on one step. They will design a humane trap that could be used to catch cane toads, an invasive species in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><b>Unit: <\/b><em>To The Rescue: Engineering Aid Drop Packages (EA): <\/em>Students will engineer \u201caid drop packages\u201d that can be dropped from an aircraft, protect what\u2019s inside, and are easy to find once they reach the ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/li>\n            <li class=\"accordion-group\">\n        <div class=\"accordion-heading\"><h4 class=\"accordion-title\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion6\" href=\"#accordion-panel-8\">Grade 4<\/a><\/h4><\/div>\n        <div id=\"accordion-panel-8\" class=\"accordion-body collapse out\">\n          <div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n<p><b>Unit:\u00a0<\/b><em>Light up the Night: An Electrical Engineering Challenge (EA):\u00a0<\/em>After experimenting with circuits and sculpting materials, students will design a light display that replicates the Northern Lights.<\/p>\n<p><b>Unit: <\/b><em>In Good Hands: Engineering Space Gloves (EA<\/em>): Students work as materials engineers, considering the trade-offs of each material in their space gloves to help astronauts complete one of three missions to an asteroid, Earth\u2019s moon, or Mars.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><br \/>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/li>\n            <li class=\"accordion-group\">\n        <div class=\"accordion-heading\"><h4 class=\"accordion-title\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion6\" href=\"#accordion-panel-9\">Grade 5<\/a><\/h4><\/div>\n        <div id=\"accordion-panel-9\" class=\"accordion-body collapse out\">\n          <div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n<p><b>Unit: <\/b><em>Shake Things Up: Engineering Earthquake-Resistant Buildings (EA): <\/em>Students will engineer model buildings that are earthquake resistant. They\u2019ll also develop building codes that help others build earthquake-resistant structures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>A Slippery Slope: Engineering an Avalanche Protection System (EA):<\/em> Students\u00a0use what they learn from designing barriers and catches to engineer an avalanche protection system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><small>[2] The Engineering Adventures curriculum was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston, specifically for afterschool programs.
