Its purpose remains to improve educational outcomes in STEM disciplines throughout Baltimore City\u2019s elementary schools.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\" id=\"accordion1\">\n          <li class=\"accordion-group\">\n        <div class=\"accordion-heading\"><h4 class=\"accordion-title\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion1\" href=\"#accordion-panel-2\">WHY VOLUNTEER<\/a><\/h4><\/div>\n        <div id=\"accordion-panel-2\" class=\"accordion-body collapse out\">\n          <div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n<ul>\n<li>Welcome students into the STEM pipeline at an early age and encourage them to consider STEM majors\/careers<\/li>\n<li>Provide students with a meaningful opportunity to meet STEM experts<\/li>\n<li>Explain how science and math are utilized by engineers<\/li>\n<li>Discuss real-life applications of the tools and concepts that students learn in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Introduce students to STEM careers<\/li>\n<li>Support students completing Student Driven Projects \u2013 using STEM to improve aspects of their community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/li>\n            <li class=\"accordion-group\">\n        <div class=\"accordion-heading\"><h4 class=\"accordion-title\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion1\" href=\"#accordion-panel-3\">WHO CAN VOLUNTEER<\/a><\/h4><\/div>\n        <div id=\"accordion-panel-3\" class=\"accordion-body collapse out\">\n          <div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n<ul>\n<li>STEM professionals<\/li>\n<li>STEM\u00a0retirees<\/li>\n<li>STEM faculty<\/li>\n<li>STEM staff<\/li>\n<li>STEM post docs<\/li>\n<li>STEM\u00a0graduate students<\/li>\n<li>STEM undergraduate students<\/li>\n<li>STEM enthusiasts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/li>\n            <li class=\"accordion-group\">\n        <div class=\"accordion-heading\"><h4 class=\"accordion-title\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion1\" href=\"#accordion-panel-4\">WHAT &amp; WHEN<\/a><\/h4><\/div>\n        <div id=\"accordion-panel-4\" class=\"accordion-body collapse out\">\n          <div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n<ul>\n<li>Become a mentor for afterschool SABES!\n<ul>\n<li>Serve with a partner mentor in support of one SABES afterschool classroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Support the classroom approximately 6-8 hours \/ month (plus travel time)\n<ul>\n<li>Each week, a pair of mentors assists the students during a 2-hour SABES class<\/li>\n<li>A mentor should visit the classroom 3 or 4 times \/ month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Serve 28 weeks (or less) throughout the school year\n<ul>\n<li>Classes meet four hours a week (sometime between 2:30 and 6:00 PM, Monday \u2013 Thursday)<\/li>\n<li>Training for afterschool mentors is typically held in September or October<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As an afterschool mentor, you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>build relationships with students and a facilitator<\/li>\n<li>encourage and guide students during STEM activities<\/li>\n<li>support learning of critical thinking skills and the Engineering Design Process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hear from our afterschool mentors about their experience: <\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"media video\">\n<div class=\"responsive-media\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.219709208401%\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SABES Volunteering\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/90537900?h=9a6853dcb8&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"619\" height=\"348\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
