Job Opportunities

Two postdoctoral positions are available in Papanikolaou’s group at the Johns Hopkins University that are focused in elucidating, through intertwined theoretical and experimental investigations, the fundamental aspects of stochasticity of crystal plasticity near sample boundaries.

Postdoctoral Position in: Experiments on surface nanoindentation of thin films

This position will focus on performing experiments that relate to  nanoindentation of polycrystalline films under multiaxial stress tests. Al, Cu will be deposited on glass substrates and multiaxial stress will be applied through 4-point bending. Candidates should have significant experience with film deposition techniques, EBSD methods, transmission electron microscopy methods, and related instrumentation. The postdoctoral associate will be advised by  Prof.Papanikolaou — in addition, there will be significant technical support and guidance from Professor Kevin Hemker and his group. A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline is required.  The position will be available starting September 1, 2015.  The initial appointment duration is 1 year, with the possibility of support beyond that term (by 2 years) depending on well pre-defined accomplishments.

Postdoctoral Position in: Discrete dislocation plasticity and statistical mechanics of abrupt mechanical deformation

This position will focus primarily on the code development and computation for dislocation systems in two and three dimensions for the simulation of crystal nanoindentation. Other projects on applications of statistical mechanics in different contexts may be pursued as well. Candidates should have significant experience with simulations and statistical mechanics of frustrated systems or simulations of dislocation dynamics.  Expertise in python, C/C++ and high performance cluster computing is desirable, but not essential.  A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline is required.  The position will be available starting September 1, 2015. The initial appointment duration is 1 year, with the possibility of support beyond that term (by 1-2 years) depending on accomplishments and funding availability.
