In two innovative summer programs offered through the partnership<\/a> between the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering and Barclay Elementary\/Middle School<\/a> and held at Barclay last week, Baltimore area students explored everything from computer programming and video game design to how to engineer a package that will keep ice cream cold as it travels from the factory to retail outlets.<\/p>\n

In \u201cInventors Camp,\u201d 5th graders from Barclay and other Baltimore area schools worked with staff from Barclay School, the Whiting School\u2019s Center for Educational Outreach<\/a>, and several volunteer JHU students to create ice cream packaging and to design a portable water filtration device. During the program, students visited JHU\u2019s Digital Media Center<\/a>, where they worked with staff to design and create logo buttons for their projects.<\/p>\n

In \u201cMakey from Scratch\u201d camp, middle school students from Barclay and other schools used \u201cScratch,\u201d a simple video game creation software and \u201cMakey Makey\u201d kits, which allow students to design creative video game controllers under the supervision of WSE staff and undergraduate student mentors through JHU\u2019s Charm City Science League<\/a>.<\/p>\n
