The program has as its objectives that, within 3 to 5 years of completing their studies, our graduates will:<\/p>\n

- Be engaged in advanced education, research, and development to advance materials science and engineering; or in professional disciplines that benefit from an understanding of MSE.<\/li>\n
- Employ elements of the materials research process in their careers including the use of:\n
- \n
- critical reasoning to identify fundamental issues and establish directions for investigation<\/li>\n
- creative processes to define specific plans for problem solution<\/li>\n
- analytical thought to interpret results and place them within a broader context<\/li>\n
- application of materials science and engineering solutions to enhance or improve existing and future technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Conduct themselves to the highest standards of ethical professional practice, understanding the societal and global effects of their work, and using their knowledge and skills to improve the human condition.<\/li>\n

Student Outcomes<\/h2>\n
Students graduating with a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering will have demonstrated:<\/p>\n

- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics<\/li>\n
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors<\/li>\n
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences<\/li>\n
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts<\/li>\n
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives<\/li>\n
