Four\u00a0materials science\u00a0professors\u00a0were\u00a0recently\u00a0awarded funding through the Johns Hopkins\u00a0Office of the Vice Provost for Research. OVPR offers two\u00a0separate\u00a0awards\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the Catalyst Award and the Discovery Award\u00a0\u2014\u00a0to support\u00a0research by\u00a0Hopkins faculty.\u00a0Together, they\u00a0comprise\u00a0a nine-year, $45 million investment in the \u201ccreativity and collaborative spirit of the Johns Hopkins faculty.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assistant materials science professors Dingchang Lin and Corey Oses\u00a0were selected as recipients of the 2026 Catalyst Award. The award is\u00a0for\u00a0early career faculty embarking on promising research or\u00a0creative endeavors.\u00a0Oses\u2019 research focuses on\u00a0developing\u00a0databases, machine learning, and artificial intelligence\u00a0frameworks to aid with\u00a0the discovery of materials for clean and renewable energy.\u00a0\u00a0Lin, who is also a core researcher\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Institute for\u00a0NanoBioTechnology,\u00a0works at the intersection of materials, neurology, and biological systems.\u00a0His research focuses on engineering proteins and devices that\u00a0function in living organisms and address technological gaps in cell biology, neuroscience,\u00a0and materials science. The award grants both Lin and Oses $100,000\u00a0towards their research as well as mentoring opportunities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Materials science professors Howard Katz and\u00a0Kalina Hristova were recipients of OVPR\u2019s\u00a02026 Discovery\u00a0Awards.\u00a0The Discovery Award recognizes \u201ccross divisional teams, comprised of faculty and\/or non-faculty members from at least two schools or affiliates of the university, who are poised to arrive at important discoveries.\u201d\u00a0Hristova\u00a0researches\u00a0the structure and assembly of biological membranes\u00a0and how they inform cell signaling and drug delivery.\u00a0The\u00a0award will help fund her project entitled \u201cSignaling Bias Induced by Oncogenic EGFR Mutations\u201d\u00a0with School of Medicine professor\u00a0Chuan-Hsiang Huang.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
