Sommerman Engineering Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, which recognizes her excellence in instruction, success in instilling the desire to learn, and dedication to undergraduate students. It is part of the Whiting School\u2019s 2024 Excellent in Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring awards.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elazar-Mittelman discovered a passion for education when she was in high school. \u201cI was a member of the tutoring club and would volunteer to tutor other students during lunch,\u201d she says. \u201cI enjoyed that, so I started meeting with students privately and consistently throughout the week.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With initial aspirations to be a teacher, she started in the University of Maryland\u2019s Terrapin Teachers program before switching to the materials science and engineering program. She earned her Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) last year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the Whiting School, Elazar-Mittelman has applied her talents as a teaching assistant for two courses: the introductory \u201cFoundations of Materials Science and Engineering\u201d class and \u201cPhrase Transformation of Materials,\u201d a graduate-level kinetics course.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI interact with students on both ends of their college education: I teach one of the first classes freshman take, and one of the last classes for graduate students,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her approach to teaching is informed by the needs of the students. She empathizes with the challenges first-year students face and aims to help with their struggles as they transition into college life.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere was a mentorship component to working with freshmen&#8230; I had to teach them complex engineering topics at a basic level while showing them how to structure their homework and schedule their week,\u201d says Elazar-Mittelman.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also understands the demands of earning an advanced degree. She relates the graduate curriculum to potential careers and qualifying exams, comprehensive oral assessments that are critical to obtaining a PhD. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI always tied doctorate coursework to examples in research and industry, with the ultimate goal of passing their qualifying exams,\u201d she says. \u201cI think they appreciated our discussions.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those efforts have not gone unnoticed; According to one of Elazar-Mittelman\u2019s advisors, Materials Science and Engineering Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/jonah-erlebacher\/\"><span>Jonah Erlebacher<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cMany students have told me how Hadas helped review and solidify the concepts associated with complicated topics like X-ray diffraction, leading to better understanding. Now a year later, students still tell me how great she was as a TA.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond the classroom, Elazar-Mittleman organized comprehensive review sessions as the director of department engagement for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/people\/materials-graduate-society-mgs\/\"><span>Materials Graduate Society (MGS)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She now serves as co-president of MGS, a representative in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energyinstitute.jhu.edu\/\"><span>Ralph O\u2019Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Graduate Student Association and leads the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hcc.wse.jhu.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hopkins Catalysis Club (HCC)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her diverse teaching experiences deepened her understanding of engineering instruction, and she learned that there is more to teaching complicated scientific topics than lectures and homework.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCommunity building is a huge part of teaching,\u201d says Elazar-Mittelman. \u201cWhen I was online learning during my master\u2019s program, I missed having a learning community. Becoming a TA has allowed me to foster connections and improve my communication skills by explaining difficult concepts to young students.
