Preetom (Ruku) Borah, a PhD candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering<\/span>, <\/span>earned <\/span>a Student<\/span> Presentation Award<\/span> for his lecture<\/span> in the <\/span>Advances in Reactive Materials Engineering<\/span> Symposium at the <\/span>2023 Materials Research Society (<\/span>MRS) <\/span>Fall Meeting & Exhibit,<\/span> held in<\/span> Boston, Massachusetts in late November.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Borah works in the lab of Tim Weihs, a professor of materials science and engineering and director of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (<\/span>MSEE URA<\/span><\/a>), where he <\/span>focuses on <\/span>approaches to<\/span> counteracting chemical warfare agents (CWAs).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Borah\u2019s winning presentation <\/span>described key findings from experiments <\/span>with d<\/span>iisopropyl methyl phosphonate (DIMP), <\/span>a gas simulant<\/span>. In one study, he ignited a combination of metallic powders to diffuse the effects of DIMP. He found that by controlling the combustion of these powders in the presence of DIMP vapor, the simulant showed signs of decomposition, suggesting neutralization of the gas. The signs of neutralization point toward the possibility of alternate ways to diffuse chemical agents, he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, Borah plans to identify ways to control the decomposition of DIMP using various mixtures of aluminum, magnesium, and zirconium.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal going forward is to see, now that we\u2019ve demonstrated the capability to neutralize DIMP with one chemistry, how can we tune that decomposition?\u201d says Borah. \u201cThe next step is to test multiple chemistries, seeing what\u2019s going to improve or detract from that decomposition.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-45305","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","news_categories-awards-and-honors","news_categories-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nPhD Candidate Wins Student Presentation Award at Fall MRS Meeting -
