New Electron-Carrying Organic Semiconductors

Organic semiconductors for use in plastic electronic devices and other alternative active circuits such as display backplanes are generally hole-transporters. It is much more challenging to design electron transporters, which are often needed to complete a circuit or even a single device.

It is much more challenging to design electron transporters, which are often needed to complete a circuit or even a single device. We have focused on novel aromatic diimide compounds and heterocyclic oligomers, taking advantage of the stabilization provided by fluorinated side chains. We continue to develop both the chemistry to synthesize new compounds and device architectures that take best advantage of the energy levels and surface properties of the compounds. We have demonstrated air-operable transistors and diodes using very few synthetic and processing steps that have mobilities and rectification capabilities acceptable for applications such as pixel switching and sensing.
