Metallic Glasses on the Atomic Scale

The objective of our project is to investigate the structure of metallic glasses via atomistic simulation and experimental characterization.

metallic glasses on the atomic scaleThe structure of metallic glasses (MGs) has been a long-standing mystery. On the one hand, MGs are amorphous materials with no long-range structural order; on the other hand, topological and chemical short-to-medium range order is expected to be pronounced in these alloys, due to their high atomic packing density and the varying chemical affinity between the constituent elements.

The objective of our project is to investigate the structure of metallic glasses via atomistic simulation and experimental characterization. Both short-range order and medium-range order in metallic glasses are being investigated. The structural origins of a variety of MG properties, especially the structural processes underlying mechanical behavior such as shear transformations, are being uncovered.
