Sachs Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/natalia-trayanova\/\">Natalia Trayanova<\/a>\u00a0and her team is more accurate than doctors\u00a0at spotting which patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy\u2014a common inherited condition\u00a0that thickens the heart muscle\u2014are most likely\u00a0to suffer from sudden cardiac death. The linchpin\u00a0is the system\u2019s ability to analyze long underused\u00a0heart imaging, alongside full medical records.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the condition at the study\u2019s center, affects:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A. 1 in every 2,000 people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B. 1 in every 200\u2013500 people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. 1 in every 20,000 people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer: <strong>B<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 1 in 200\u2013500 people\u00a0worldwide live with this\u00a0disease. Most lead normal\u00a0lives, but some face a\u00a0much higher risk of sudden\u00a0cardiac death, particularly\u00a0young people and athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Current guidelines for\u00a0spotting high-risk patients are accurate about:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A. 90% of the time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B. 50% of the time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. 25% of the time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer:<strong> B \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 50%\u2014\u201cnot much better than throwing dice,\u201d says Trayanova, senior author of the study, which was published in Nature Cardiovascular Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. What makes the new Johns Hopkins AI model, nicknamed MAARS (for Multimodal AI for ventricular Arrhythmia Risk Stratification), different?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A. It studies DNA&nbsp;sequences&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B. It can read MRI&nbsp;heart scans in a way&nbsp;doctors cannot&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. It listens to heartbeats&nbsp;through smartwatches&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer<strong>: B<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, AI can\u00a0detect scarring patterns in\u00a0MRI images that doctors\u00a0have struggled to interpret,\u00a0combining that with\u00a0other medical data to\u00a0sharpen risk predictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. When tested on real patients, how accurate was MAARS?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A. 63%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B. 75%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. 89%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer:<strong> C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">89% overall\u2014and 93% for patients aged 40 to 60, the group most at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Beyond saving lives,\u00a0what\u2019s another benefit\u00a0of MAARS?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A. It eliminates MRIs&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B. It could spare&nbsp;patients unnecessary&nbsp;defibrillator implants&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. It requires no&nbsp;medical records&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer:<strong> B<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many patients receive&nbsp;defibrillators that they may&nbsp;never need.
