{"id":908,"date":"2012-07-15T16:07:37","date_gmt":"2012-07-15T20:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=908"},"modified":"2017-07-28T16:09:27","modified_gmt":"2017-07-28T20:09:27","slug":"breaking-new-ground-malone-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2012\/07\/breaking-new-ground-malone-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking New Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the eve of the Johns Hopkins University 2012 Commencement in May, the Whiting School of Engineering ushered in a new era of research with the official groundbreaking for the new Malone Hall. The 69,000-square-foot building, located on the Decker Quad, will house at least three collaborative research institutes and the Department of Computer Science.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"john-malone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_C._Malone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John C. Malone, MSE &#8217;64, PhD &#8217;69<\/a>, who in 2010 made a $30 million gift to fund the building, returned to Homewood for the groundbreaking ceremonies and to name the inaugural John C. Malone Professor. It was Malone&#8217;s first time on campus since he defended his doctoral thesis four decades ago. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree the following day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am honored that I am in a position to give back,&#8221; said Malone, a forward-thinking cable industry executive and chairman of Liberty Media Corp., who has helped reshape the nation&#8217;s electronic retailing, media, communications, and entertainment landscape.<\/p>\n<p>At the celebration, the Whiting School installed <a title=\"Russell H. Taylor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.jhu.edu\/~rht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russell H. Taylor<\/a> &#8217;70 as the inaugural Malone Professor. Taylor is known as a visionary in the field of surgical robotics. As director of the <a title=\"Russell H. Taylor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.jhu.edu\/~rht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engineering Research Center for Computer-Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology<\/a>, he has pioneered the cross-disciplinary research that Malone sees as critical.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the day, Malone visited the Richard A. Swirnow Computer-Integrated Surgical and Interventional Systems Mock Operating Room in Hackerman Hall, where Taylor briefed him on the latest work to harness the power of robots to improve surgical techniques.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_909\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 610px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/magazine-summer2012-malone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-909 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/magazine-summer2012-malone.jpg\" alt=\"malone\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/magazine-summer2012-malone.jpg 600w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/magazine-summer2012-malone-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Malone and Russ Taylor look on as Malone\u2019s nephew, Dan Sanchez, takes the da Vinci Surgical Robot for a test drive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The meeting was a reunion of sorts for the men, who both studied at Johns Hopkins in the late 1960s under Mandell Bellmore, PhD &#8217;65. Malone was a PhD candidate in operations research, and Taylor was an undergraduate in engineering science.
