These frequent injections are also uncomfortable and burdensome.<\/p>\n<p>The new peptide-based medicine and delivery strategy offers two key advantages: First, the medicine appears to be more effective at halting and reversing the runaway blood vessel growth and leakage. Second, innovative delivery systems\u2014including formation of a natural depot and biodegradable coatings\u2014allow the medicine to stay in the eye longer, gradually delivering the peptide to the retina and, thus, greatly reducing the number of required injections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis treatment has the potential to improve the vision of patients with diabetic macular edema and wet AMD,\u201d says Green, an associate professor with joint appointments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biomedical Engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Materials Science and Engineering<\/a>, who was named by <em>Popular Science<\/em> as one of the nation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/article\/science\/brilliant-ten-jordan-green-trains-immune-systems-fight-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brilliant 10<\/a> young scientists in 2014 and received the <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2016\/02\/19\/presidential-early-career-awards-bumpus-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers<\/a> from President Barack Obama in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Popel and Green co-founded <a href=\"http:\/\/asclepix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AsclepiX Therapeutics<\/a> to commercialize their work on peptide-based therapies that hold the potential to treat degenerative eye disease and other ailments, including cancer.
