{"id":5140,"date":"2017-01-10T10:39:53","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T15:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=5140"},"modified":"2017-01-10T10:39:54","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T15:39:54","slug":"all-aboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/all-aboard\/","title":{"rendered":"All Aboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Modern rail systems handle everything from transporting large amounts of goods across state lines to getting you to the office on time.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, railways and metro networks run smoothly, but every so often, there\u2019s an incident\u2014a crash, a spill, or a potential bomb threat\u2014that requires transit workers to quickly assess the scene and, ultimately, keep things moving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/all-aboard\/alumninoll1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5312 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ALUMNINoll1-300x240.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo of IRiS\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ALUMNINoll1-300x240.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ALUMNINoll1-768x614.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ALUMNINoll1-1024x819.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Inspecting these incidents on the railways can involve putting first responders in harm\u2019s way and can take hours or even days. That\u2019s why the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transportation Security Administration<\/a> tasked the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jhuapl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory <\/a>with coming up with a better solution.<\/p>\n<p>On the team assigned to the project was Michael Noll, MS \u201907, a member of APL\u2019s senior professional staff. Over two years, he and the team worked to develop and test a prototype for a new, unmanned system nicknamed IRiS (Instrumented Rail Inspection System). It can be deployed within minutes and can assess a crash site or chemical spill remotely, greatly reducing the risk for human injury.<\/p>\n<p>Equipped with cameras and video equipment, IRiS can ride the rails, get up close, gather data, and then send that information back to the first responders who are controlling the vehicle from a portable pad or base station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not a system like this that can be remotely driven into a tunnel,\u201d says Noll, who served as the communications engineer on the project.<\/p>\n<p>APL is currently working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harsco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harsco Corp.<\/a>\u00a0to get IRiS up and running.
