{"id":5092,"date":"2017-01-10T10:40:49","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T15:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=5092"},"modified":"2017-01-10T10:59:03","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T15:59:03","slug":"a-boon-on-the-battlefield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/a-boon-on-the-battlefield\/","title":{"rendered":"A Boon on the Battlefield?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When a battlefield explosion injures a soldier\u2019s face or neck, the critical air passage between the head and lungs may become blocked, leading to brain damage and death within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>To help treat such injuries, an undergraduate team led by senior <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">biomedical engineering<\/a> major Antonio Spina has designed a low-cost, low-tech device dubbed <a href=\"http:\/\/jhubmedesignteam2.wixsite.com\/cric\" target=\"_blank\">CricSpike<\/a> that may boost the success rate when combat medics need to create an artificial airway and pump air into the lungs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZnDrjWbVGJY\" target=\"_blank\">2016 prototype design<\/a> has earned awards at medical device competitions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5576\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/a-boon-on-the-battlefield\/_dsc1635\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5576\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5576 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC1635-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Students demonstrating CricSpike\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC1635-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC1635-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC1635-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: JOHN BIDLACK<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The student invention focuses on the emergency neck incision tactic called a cricothyrotomy\u2014a tricky treatment that must be done very quickly under less-than-ideal conditions, which does not always work.<\/p>\n<p>With retired U.S. Army physician James Gilman as the team\u2019s sponsor and medical adviser, the students devised an improved intratracheal tip that is carefully crafted to extend beyond the skin layers to the windpipe but not far enough to reach the esophagus.
