His worry: Large cranes or trucks might accidently crush a worker because it is so difficult for heavy equipment operators to \u201csee\u201d blind spots on a job site.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking a solution, the elder Dahbura turned to several students in his Computer Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship class, who already were working on Bluetooth-enabled beacon technology. The team\u2014Dahbura, Sunyan Lee \u201916, and Stanley Ho \u201916\u2014sketched out a concept and worked on a patent disclosure. Their idea: Beacons embedded in workers\u2019 hardhats (moving around on the job site) transmit data to stationary sensors on equipment. This enables the hardhats to \u201cbeam\u201d their locations to computer screens mounted in the cabs of heavy equipment.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving a grant from the Whiting School\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/cohen-translational-engineering-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cohen Translational Engineering Fund<\/a>, set up by Neil Cohen \u201983 and his wife, Sherry, to fund translational research, the undergraduates are working with co-mentors Sathappan Ramesh and <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/faculty\/pouliquen-philippe-o\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philippe Pouliquen<\/a> to design a prototype to be tested this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 MARY BETH REGAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>On Your Feet! <\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6100\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 255px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/upstarts-7\/on-your-feet\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6100\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6100 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/On-your-feet.jpg\" alt=\"Stand-up CT scanner\" width=\"245\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: CARESTREAM HEALTH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new type of CT scanner, the product of research from a team led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">biomedical engineering<\/a> professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/faculty_staff\/jeffrey-h-siewerdsen-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Siewerdsen,<\/a> has been approved for commercial use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The scanner allows patients to stand (rather than lie flat) as it examines the joints of their feet, ankles, or knees. Because those joints are bearing weight when the standing patient is being scanned, health care practitioners can detect issues that might not otherwise be evident.<\/p>\n<p>Developed in part with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carestream.com\/default.aspx?LangType=1033\" target=\"_blank\">Carestream Health<\/a> of Rochester, New York, the new scanner also provides higher-quality images at lower radiation levels. Compared to a conventional CT scanner, the new scanner is able to show not just fine bone details, but also cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Because of the negligible radiation issues, clinics can install them without a need for shielded rooms, as is standard with conventional CT scanners.<\/p>\n<p>The product was invented through an academic-industry partnership and translated to clinical trials at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/the_johns_hopkins_hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\">Johns Hopkins Hospital<\/a>. The exclusive licensing deal was handled by <a href=\"https:\/\/ventures.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 MICHAEL BLUMFIELD <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Toward Better Tissue Repair <\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6108\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/upstarts-7\/cells\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6108\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6108 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cells-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of cells\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cells-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cells.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Patients with soft tissue damage will experience dramatic improvements when treated with LifeSprout Tissue Regenerative Matrix, made from biodegradable materials. <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/\" target=\"_blank\">Materials science<\/a> professor <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/faculty\/hai-quan-mao\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hai-Quan Mao<\/a>, associate director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/inbt.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for NanoBioTechnology<\/a>, collaborating with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/som\/\" target=\"_blank\">Johns Hopkins School of Medicine<\/a> faculty members Justin Sacks and Sashank Reddy, developed the technology that combines a tissue-plumping hydrogel with a cell-supporting nanofiber framework.<\/p>\n<p>The nanofibers are composed of surgical sutures already commonly used in the clinic, and the hydrogel is made of a popular dermal filler. The injectable material provides instant volume to the damaged area while creating a fertile environment for tissue growth. The resulting tissue repairs\u2014which could be life-altering for cancer patients, wounded soldiers, or diabetics, the researchers say\u2014are individualized and have a reduced chance of scarring. Over time, the nanofibers disintegrate, and patients are left with fresh, new tissue made of their own cells, with little or no risk of inflammation or rejection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/2016\/05\/27\/lifesprout-is-one-of-recipients-of-inaugural-thalheimer-fund-grant\/#.WG6LwrYrJBw\" target=\"_blank\">The Louis B.
