But scientists\u00a0don\u2019t fully understand them, which has limited the development of effective drugs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2016\/06\/all-lit-up\/hristova\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4812\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4812\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hristova-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Kalina Hristova\" width=\"400\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hristova-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hristova.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWhen you\u2019re trying to target a receptor for designer therapeutics, it\u2019s good to know exactly how it works,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/materials\/faculty\/kalina-hristova\/\">Kalina\u00a0Hristova,<\/a> professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/materials.jhu.edu\">materials science and engineering<\/a> at the Whiting School.<\/p>\n<p>Hristova\u00a0and her team have now come up with a fluorescence-based technique that allows them to precisely measure receptor interactions in living cells. Described in\u00a0<em>Integrative Biology<\/em>, it relies on intelligent software written by\u00a0Hristova\u2019s\u00a0graduate student Christopher King for a special microscope called a two-photon spectral microscope. The software uses theoretical models and complex math to tease out molecular interaction details from the fluorescence spectra.<\/p>\n<p>With the new \u201cfully quantified spectral imaging\u201d method, the researchers can determine if and exactly how the proteins interact in cell membranes.
