That pretty much describes how the Alonzo G. and Virginia Decker Quadrangle (located just south of Garland Hall) and the southern end of the Homewood campus have looked since last spring. To the untrained eye, it was a mess. But slowly, order seems to be emerging from the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>The Decker Quadrangle, set for completion in the fall of 2007, will establish a new public entrance to the Homewood campus, including a visitors and admissions center (Mason Hall), the Whiting School\u2019s new Computational Science and Engineering Building, and a massive underground parking garage, covered by a new multi-use quadrangle.<\/p>\n<p>As you might imagine, the whole undertaking has meant moving a lot of dirt and pouring a lot of concrete. To get a sense of just how much, consider:<\/p>\n<pre>Dirt removed from\t\r\nconstruction site: \t\t\t12,000 truck loads*\r\n\r\nAverage depth of hole\r\ndug for parking garage: \t\t30 feet\r\n\r\nCapacity of underground garage: \t604 vehicles\r\n\r\nConcrete poured: \t\t\t18,504 cubic yards\r\n\r\nRebar installed: \t\t\t2.1 million pounds\r\n\r\nPost tension cables installed: \t\t144 miles\r\n\r\nMechanical piping installed: \t\t14,200 linear feet\r\n\r\nConcrete masonry\r\nunits (CMUs) used: \t\t\t45,000 blocks\r\n\r\nCMU grout used: \t\t\t150 cubic yards\r\n\r\nTent tie-downs installed (for\r\nspecial events) on new quad: \t\t64 metal anchors\r\n\r\nLabor hours: 340,000 hours\r\nArea of Computational Science\r\nand Engineering Building: \t\t79,000 square feet\r\n\r\n*Figures as of press time\r\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enormous cranes, trucks, bright orange trailers, and lots of mud.
