{"id":18678,"date":"2023-06-13T10:34:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T14:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=18678"},"modified":"2023-06-23T12:40:09","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T16:40:09","slug":"elevating-equity-in-faculty-advancement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2023\/06\/elevating-equity-in-faculty-advancement\/","title":{"rendered":"Elevating Equity in Faculty Advancement"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Elevating-Equity-Art-copy.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18680 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Elevating-Equity-Art-copy-e1685553042129.jpeg\" alt=\"Graphic showing hot air balloons floating amongst clouds.\" width=\"924\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Elevating-Equity-Art-copy-e1685553042129.jpeg 924w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Elevating-Equity-Art-copy-e1685553042129-300x207.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Elevating-Equity-Art-copy-e1685553042129-768x529.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 924px) 100vw, 924px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Supported by a $3 million national science foundation grant, experts at Johns Hopkins, New York, and Carnegie Mellon Universities are developing a model for institutional change that not only supports equitable advancement and support of faculty from groups underrepresented in engineering, but that other peer institutions also can customize and use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.cmu.edu\/news-events\/news\/2022\/07\/04-elevate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project ELEVATE<\/a> (Equity-focused Launch to Empower and Value AGEP Faculty to Thrive in Engineering) is part of the NSF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/funding\/opportunities\/alliances-graduate-education-professoriate-agep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are creating a career-pathway model that will help all three institutions, as well as countless more, ensure we have inclusive cultures that enable all members to reach their full potential,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/diversity-and-inclusion\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darlene Saporu<\/a>, assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at the Whiting School, and co-principal investigator on the grant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/andrew-s-douglas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Douglas<\/a>, professor emeritus in the <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whiting School\u2019s Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a> and former vice provost for faculty affairs, is the project\u2019s principal investigator, with Saporu and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/ed-schlesinger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Schlesinger<\/a>, Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School, serving as co-PIs.<\/p>\n<p>First steps include a self-study and external evaluation to assess each institution\u2019s policies and practices. \u201cWe are looking at the institutional systems that faculty from underrepresented groups must navigate, from hiring and onboarding to promotion and tenure, and we\u2019re analyzing which policies are not equitable or transparent,\u201d Saporu says.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the project will be robust mentorship programs pairing tenure-stream faculty members with trained faculty members\u2014all full professors\u2014at partner institutions. \u201cMentors have an important role in helping a person understand unwritten rules and norms,\u201d says Saporu. \u201cWe think it will be easier for early career faculty to talk openly about challenges and to ask questions if their mentors are not at their own institutions,\u201d says Saporu.<\/p>\n<p>Project ELEVATE faculty from all three universities will gather in the Baltimore area early this summer for a retreat and social justice training offered by Baltimore nonprofit Thread, founded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/people\/faculty\/sarah-hemminger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Hemminger \u201902, PhD \u201910<\/a>. \u201cThe goal of the retreatis to harness the power of relationships, learn active listening, reflect on the values of privilege, overcome barriers, and interrogate power,\u201d Saporu says. \u201cAll of these are important discussions, but we are just getting started.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supported by a $3 million national science foundation grant, experts at Johns Hopkins, New York, and Carnegie Mellon Universities are developing a model for institutional change that not only supports equitable advancement and support of faculty from groups underrepresented in engineering, but that other peer institutions also can customize and use.
