The researchers described the Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot, or STAR, recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scirobotics.abj2908\"><i>Science Robotics<\/i><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings show that we can automate one of the most intricate and delicate tasks in surgery: the reconnection of two ends of an intestine,\u201d says senior author <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/axel-krieger\/\">Axel Krieger<\/a>, PhD \u201908, an assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\">mechanical engineering<\/a> at the Whiting School and a member of the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics. \u201cThe STAR performed the procedure in four animals, and it produced significantly better results than humans performing the same procedure.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The robot excelled at intestinal anastomosis, a procedure that requires a high level of repetitive motion and precision. Connecting two ends of an intestine is arguably the most challenging step in gastrointestinal surgery, requiring a surgeon to suture with high accuracy and consistency. Even the slightest hand tremor or misplaced stitch can result in a leak that could have catastrophic complications for the patient.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Working with collaborators at Children\u2019s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/jin-u-kang\/\">Jin Kang<\/a>, the Jacob Suter Jammer Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/\">Electrical Engineering<\/a>, Krieger helped create the robot, a vision-guided system designed specifically to suture soft tissue. Their current iteration advances a 2016 model that repaired a pig\u2019s intestines accurately but required a large incision to access the intestine and more guidance from humans.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The team equipped the STAR with new features for enhanced autonomy and improved surgical precision,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17061\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 210px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17061 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/WSJ57418_200908_00194-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/WSJ57418_200908_00194-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/WSJ57418_200908_00194-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/WSJ57418_200908_00194-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/WSJ57418_200908_00194.jpeg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Axel Krieger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>including specialized suturing tools and state-of-the-art imaging systems that provide more accurate visualizations of the surgical field.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Soft tissue surgery is especially hard for robots because of its unpredictability, forcing them to be able to adapt quickly to handle unexpected obstacles, Krieger says. The STAR has a novel control system that can adjust the surgical plan in real time, just as a human surgeon would.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes the STAR special is that it is the first robotic system to plan, adapt, and execute a surgical plan in soft tissue with minimal human intervention,\u201d says first author Hamed Saeidi, a visiting research scientist in mechanical engineering.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What guides STAR is a structural, light\u2013 based, three-dimensional endoscope and machine learning\u2013based tracking algorithm developed by Kang and his students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A robot designed by a Johns Hopkins team has performed laparoscopic surgery on the soft tissue of a pig without the guiding hand of a human\u2014a significant step toward fully automated surgery on humans.
