The last player to bat .400 was Ted Williams in 1941. No one\u2019s come close to repeating Joe DiMaggio\u2019s 56-game hitting streak in that same year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Math\u2019s importance to the sport is enduring. The statistical recap of each game (or box score) took shape in the 1860s, mere decades after the baseball\u2019s invention. Expanding and refining data have gone hand in hand with the sport\u2019s growth in the 19th and 20th centuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Baseball\u2019s love affair with statistics has deepened in recent decades, as baseball teams have invested in an innovative empirical analysis of statistics, driven by burgeoning technology. (The bestselling <i>Moneyball <\/i>and its 2011 film adaptation illustrated how organizations now cover this competitive edge.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Being part of baseball\u2019s data-driven present and future has proven irresistible to Neil Gahart \u201918. He was promoted in November 2021 to his new position as coordinator of major league analytics for the Miami Marlins. In that role, he provides a crucial link between those who play the game and his colleagues who break down a dizzying array of data.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Innovations in gathering and analyzing data are key, Gahart says. State-of-the-art technology\u2014such as the Hawk-Eye video system installed at all 30 major league stadiums\u2014offers a granular view of everything that happens on the field. Google Cloud feeds this voluminous information into powerful databases for analysis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16315 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Gahart_In_Marlins_Dugout-e1653339610173-175x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Gahart_In_Marlins_Dugout-e1653339610173-175x300.jpeg 175w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Gahart_In_Marlins_Dugout-e1653339610173.jpeg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/>\u201cMore sophisticated devices that can track and store a larger amount of data mean there are a lot more numbers we can associate with the game,\u201d he says. \u201cThat leads to opportunities to use those numbers to drive insights about what\u2019s going on\u2014and make better decisions.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate at the Whiting School, Gahart was an <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/\">applied mathematics and statistics<\/a> major with an abiding love of playing and watching the game. \u201cI was a huge baseball fan growing up,\u201d he recalls. He sees his job as \u201ca very cool intersection of two passions.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Johns Hopkins engineering classes were \u201cvery demanding,\u201d he says, \u201cand because they\u2019re demanding, you get a lot out of them.\u201d But outside the classroom, Gahart acquired other skills relevant to pursuing a baseball career, including an internship with the Baltimore Orioles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A baseball-themed mathematical research project provided another key moment in Gahart\u2019s journey. Scheduling games to maximize competitive fairness and minimize the impact of factors such as travel is a perpetual headache for professional leagues. So an initiative started in 2012 by the Whiting School\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/anton-dahbura\/\">Anton Dahbura<\/a>, PhD \u201984, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/isi.jhu.edu\/\">Information Security Institute<\/a> and co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iaa.jhu.edu\/\">Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy<\/a>, in collaboration with Associate Research Professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/donniell-fishkind\/\">Donniell Fishkind<\/a>, deployed the power of mathematical optimization to build better schedules.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students from Fishkind\u2019s Introduction to Optimization course, including Gahart,\u00a0helped create an improved slate of games for a number of minor league organizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the first time where the intersection of [mathematics and baseball] became very clear to me,\u201d Gahart recalls. \u201cHaving access as a second-year Hopkins undergraduate for these conversations with professors and having the\u00a0opportunity to do research is an extremely cool thing.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gahart\u2019s new role with the Marlins brings more responsibility for finding ways to use data to help the team climb the standings. Baseball is still a sport where tradition (and even superstition) hold sway, and accumulated wisdom from years of playing the game is revered. Success as an analyst means getting crucial insights to everyone involved in a way that resonates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to make sure that the people who really need those insights are aware of them\u2014and understand them at a fundamental level. You want to build relationships with people. Value their input. Value their insights,\u201d says Gahart.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wins and losses remain the most important statistic for everyone, so that gives Gahart an appreciative audience. \u201cEveryone in baseball is trying to win,\u201d he says. \u201cTo try to find an edge.
