Miller, Jr. Distinguished Professor and head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, teaches in one of the Whiting School\u2019s new remote learning studios.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Johns Hopkins University announced that the fall semester would take place entirely online, the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\">Whiting School of Engineering<\/a> built 34 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/t1mSXJZ5X1U\">state-of-the-art remote learning studios<\/a> to provide faculty and students with the most effective, high-quality remote teaching and learning experiences for live, online course delivery. Outfitted with features including enhanced video capabilities, large displays that allow students 360-degree views of the instructor and the whiteboard, and high-tech audio equipment, 130 instructors taught some 250 classes in the studios throughout the fall\u2014with great reviews from students and faculty members alike.<\/p>\n<h2>Components of a Remote Learning Studio<\/h2>\n<h3>AV Cart<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>55&#8243;\/50&#8243; Monitors\n<ul>\n<li>Two 55&#8243; x 50&#8243; monitors enhance the instructor&#8217;s ability to engage more effectively with their entire class as well as one-on-one with students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>LED Lights &amp; Microphones\n<ul>\n<li>A professional LED light panel provides consistent, even light, and stereo shotgun mics capture crisp audio, while allowing the instructor to move freely around the studio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Desk\/Podium<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Adjustable Standing Desk\n<ul>\n<li>A mobile standing desk serves as the command center for instruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Zoom Room Controller\n<ul>\n<li>The Zoom room controller serves as a universal controller for the entire studio, enabling the instructor to change Zoom settings and switch between studio technologies as needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Document Camera\n<ul>\n<li>The document camera enables the instructor to share detailed views of 3-D objects, such as circuit boards and device design components, as well as hand-written diagrams and equations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Touch Display\n<ul>\n<li>With the interactive touch display, faculty members can annotate content on their laptop while sharing it with the class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Whiteboard &amp; Whiteboard Camera<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Not visible here: The whiteboard camera removes glare and shadow, allowing faculty members to share clean, highdefinition images of what is written on their whiteboards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Whiting School of Engineering built 34 state-of-the-art remote learning studios to provide faculty and students with the most effective, high-quality remote teaching and learning experiences for live, online course delivery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":14664,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[4969,5145],"class_list":["post-14661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-impact","tag-remote-learning","tag-remote-teaching","issue-winter-2021"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
