{"id":14659,"date":"2021-02-01T10:23:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T15:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=14659"},"modified":"2021-02-01T10:36:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T15:36:48","slug":"upstarts-a-one-two-punch-for-tumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2021\/02\/upstarts-a-one-two-punch-for-tumors\/","title":{"rendered":"Upstarts: A One-Two Punch for Tumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14647\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/shutterstock_185401712-BW.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/shutterstock_185401712-BW.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/shutterstock_185401712-BW-300x188.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/>\n<p>Traditional cancer therapies designed to stimulate the immune system or mimic its normal functions are often ineffective in defending against certain cancers.<\/p>\n<p>To solve this problem, <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/honggang-cui\/\">Honggang Cui<\/a>, an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/\">chemical and biomolecular engineering<\/a> and member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/inbt.jhu.edu\/\">Institute for NanoBioTechnology<\/a>, is leading a team in developing a dual chemo-immunotherapy treatment that is designed to create an immune-responsive environment through targeted, sustained release of a cancer immunotherapy drug.<\/p>\n<p>Cui\u2019s approach is to create a selfassembling hydrogel version of the chemotherapy drug camptothecin, which can be administered directly into a tumor and released over a two-month period. The hydrogel form enables Cui to incorporate cyclic dinucleotide c-di-AMP, a molecule that activates cell signaling pathways to stimulate an immune response.
