{"id":12455,"date":"2019-05-10T11:55:35","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T15:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/?p=12455"},"modified":"2019-05-24T10:57:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T14:57:45","slug":"curbing-methane-emissions-in-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2019\/05\/curbing-methane-emissions-in-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Curbing Methane Emissions in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shutterstock_1027915915.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12456\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shutterstock_1027915915-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Methane emissions\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shutterstock_1027915915-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shutterstock_1027915915-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shutterstock_1027915915-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>China, already the world\u2019s leading emitter of human-caused greenhouse gases, continues to pump increasing amounts of climate- changing methane into the atmosphere despite tough new regulations, according to research led by <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ehe\/faculty\/scot-miller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scot Miller<\/a>, an assistant professor of environmental health and engineering at Johns Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p>Miller\u2019s study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-018-07891-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published <em>in Nature Communications<\/em><\/a> in January, indicated that although China\u2019s government had vowed to curb the nation\u2019s methane emissions, it hasn\u2019t made good on this promise.<\/p>\n<p>China is the world\u2019s largest producer and consumer of coal, which accounts for approximately 72 percent of the country\u2019s electricity generation. While data show that coal production increased in China, it has been unclear until now how much methane gas, or CH4, has increased. Regulations enacted by China in 2010 require all mines to use methane that they produce for heating or electricity generation, or to flare it.<\/p>\n<p>To examine how China\u2019s methane emissions have trended from 2010 to 2015, the research team used data from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite, launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Miller and team found that methane emissions rose by approximately 1.1 teragrams each year from 2010 to 2015 in China, resulting in about a 50 percent higher level of annual CH4 emissions by the end of the period.
