However, it\u2019s working with students at Baltimore\u2019s Barclay Elementary\/Middle School that he\u2019s found most inspirational. With sponsorship from Lockheed Martin, WSE\u2019s Clark Scholars plan an <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2018\/04\/30\/engineering-expo-stem-lockheed-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual STEM Expo at Barclay<\/a>. \u201cAs engineers, [we can] share what we love, and the kids can see what possibilities are out there to explore,\u201d says Singh.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2016, the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/2017\/01\/15-million-establishes-clark-scholars-program\/#.W-mkBHpKjUI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clark Scholars program was endowed with a gift<\/a> from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation. Amazon Echo speakers are built using Kaldi technology, a speech recognition toolkit created at the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>For workshop co-creator <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/faculty\/khudanpur-sanjeev-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanjeev Khudanpur<\/a>, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, creating public domain research that leads to products like Google Translate is fulfilling\u2014but so is the workshop\u2019s collaborative community. \u201cWe solve research problems by finding the best people and putting them in a room to see what they can do,\u201d he says. Gakenheimer Fellowship supports research in the Institute for Computational Medicine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a big year for Alexandra Loucks\u2019 affairs of the heart. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biomedical engineering<\/a> graduate student (PhD \u201920) got married, received her third David C. Malone professorships<\/a> attract and recognize faculty members who are making advances at the intersection of engineering and health care.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.jhu.edu\/faculty\/ilya-shpitser-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ilya Shpitser<\/a>, the John C. Malone Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, loves solving data puzzles, particularly those that answer global health care questions. To improve patient care and minimize adverse post-surgical outcomes, he and his team are studying Johns Hopkins Hospital patients who go in for routine cardiac surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCardiac care is complicated, and to study the issue, we use complicated data,\u201d says Shpitser, an expert in using observational data for causal inference. He mines data from claims, anesthesiology, pharmacy, surgical, and medical sources\u2014data that are rarely comprehensive and often have missing elements\u2014with the goals of making a patient\u2019s pathway from pre-surgery to discharge safer and reducing the need for readmission. \u201cIt\u2019s gratifying work and not just fancy math,\u201d says Shpitser. \u201cWe\u2019re directly doing something to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Providing Student Opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12031\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Makerspace\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Maker-Space-web.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The Makerspace in FastForward U enables students to turn their ideas into products that benefit society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Health 3D\u2014a new student club in which participants design customized 3D printers to manufacture medical instruments\u2014got fancy new digs in September in Homewood\u2019s just-opened Makerspace. So did <a href=\"https:\/\/johnshopkins.campuslabs.com\/engage\/organization\/dbf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Design, Build, Fly<\/a>\u2014a club that designs remote-controlled airplanes for the international American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics competition each year\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/baja.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Jay Racing<\/a>, which builds and races off-road vehicles for Baja Society of Automotive Engineers\u2019 international competitions.<\/p>\n<p>The 2,000-square-foot center, which was was made possible through the Hopkins Fund, is nestled within the larger <a href=\"https:\/\/ventures.jhu.edu\/fastforward-u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FastForward U<\/a> hub for entrepreneurial startups in Baltimore, is located in Remington, the neighborhood just south of the Homewood campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Makerspace is a stepping stone for entrepreneurship. The time to act on his research, though, is increasingly finite.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Maryland Department of the Environment requested Ferraro\u2019s assistance to improve compliance for the state\u2019s lead poisoning prevention program. One catch: They needed help immediately. With the financial resources of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.jhu.edu\/bloomberg-distinguished-professorships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg Distinguished Professorship<\/a> in Business and Engineering, Ferraro could oblige. \u201cWithout these funds, I would have spent a year or so trying to find grant money,\u201d says Ferraro, who has a joint appointment in the Whiting School and <a href=\"https:\/\/carey.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carey Business School<\/a>, and co-directs the <a href=\"http:\/\/centerbear.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Behavioral and Experimental Agri-Environmental Research<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a small window to change policies, and the funds give me the necessary bandwidth to act quickly. The Bloomberg name also resonates across fields, signaling that I\u2019m a credible source of information, evidence, and advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Translating Innovation for Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><strong>65% of gifts came from alumni<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11981\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11981 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/magazine-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Russell-H.-Taylor-web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Russell H. To address this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.jhu.edu\/faculty\/russell-h-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russell H. Taylor<\/a> \u201970, the John C. Malone Professor of Computer Science, and his team developed the Galen surgical robot, made possible by support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/cohen-translational-engineering-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cohen Translational Engineering Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The novel, tremor-free surgical robot (based on one developed by PhD student Kevin Olds) is surgeon-guided and \u201cworks like power steering in car,\u201d says Taylor. Both surgeon and robot hold the instrument, but the robot holds it steady, enhancing safety. \u201cThe Cohen Fund provided critical seed money for the preclinical stage to advance the project,\u201d Taylor explains.
