Another that can deliver letters and greeting cards with the speed and grace of a dragonfly. Both were among the \u201cRobo-Bugs\u201d imagined and designed by third graders at Barclay Elementary\/Middle School last fall.<\/p>\n<p>The fun began when <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\/faculty\/chen-li\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chen Li<\/a>, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/li.me.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terradynamics Laboratory<\/a> at the Whiting School, led the students on a virtual tour of his lab, which takes inspiration from insects and other creatures to design and create robots that can slither, crawl, and navigate difficult terrains. <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\/faculty\/noah-cowan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noah Cowan<\/a>, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lcsr.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics<\/a>, then reviewed the students\u2019 work and encouraged them to someday become Johns Hopkins engineers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One robot that can retrieve objects drifting into deep water using a whirligig beetle\u2019s swimming ability.
