The trick to making them useful for hematological applications is to readily detect and report on what\u2019s contained in a few drops of blood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.jhu.edu\/faculty_staff\/rene-vidal-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ren\u00e9 Vidal<\/a>, a professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering who directs the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vision.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vision Dynamics and Learning Lab<\/a>, is working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/profiles\/results\/directory\/profile\/0004611\/robert-bollinger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Bollinger<\/a>, a professor in the School of Medicine, to spearhead an effort to, in essence, teach these specialized testing devices to do just this.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are working with Belgium research institute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imec<\/a>, which is responsible for the microchip-sized sensors, as part of a joint project funded by a company called miDIAGNOSTICS. Vidal works through the heavy computational issues that are critical to the automatic analysis of images captured by the device.
