In a lecture titled “Mechanics of Living Cells,” Sun will discuss fundamental mechanisms of force generation in cells, and how cells use mass fluxes to propel themselves during cell motility and cancer metastasis. He also will describe how cells regulate their shape and volume, and how these kinematic variables can potentially connect to signaling pathways and gene regulation.

The lecture is part of the Don P. Giddens Inaugural Professorial Lecture series, established in 1993 to honor newly promoted full professors. It is named for the fifth dean of the Whiting School of Engineering.
