Schaefer Professor in electrical and computer engineering, uses computational techniques grounded in control and information theory to study biological signal transduction pathways. In addition to his primary appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, he holds secondary appointments in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the departments of Cell Biology and Biomedical Engineering at the School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Iglesias\u2019 research investigates how cells interpret directional cues to guide cell motion, the regulatory mechanisms that control cell division, and the sensing and actuation that enable cells to maintain lipid homeostasis. His computational models largely explore two stages of cell division<span>\u2014<\/span>mitotic spindle formation and cytokinesis<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and how cells direct motion.\u00a0 Applications of his work include engineering \u201ckiller cells\u201d that can engulf pathogens with high efficiency, analyzing the implications of cell morphology, and predicting behavioral changes\u00a0<\/span><span>that lead cells to become metastatic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has authored more than 150 research articles, as well as two books: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minimum Entropy Control for Time-Varying Systems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Birkh\u00e4user) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Control Theory and Systems Biology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (MIT Press). Iglesias is a member of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which named him a distinguished lecturer in 2006 and a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fellow in 2017 for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> his contributions to control theory and systems biology. He is the recipient of Johns Hopkins\u2019 George E. Owen Teaching Award, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Science Spectrum Magazine\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cScience Spectrum Trailblazer\u201d award, and the Charles E. Ives Best Paper Award for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Imaging Technology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
