Johns Hopkins is part of the new multi-institution\u00a0Learning Accelerated Domain Sciences<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(LEADS) Institute, a\u00a0Department of Energy<\/strong><\/a>-funded collaborative initiative focused on reshaping how artificial intelligence supports scientific discovery. Supported through the\u00a0Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(SciDAC) program, the effort seeks to build new AI methods and software tools aimed at solving some of the nation\u2019s most pressing scientific and engineering challenges, including those related to sustainable energy, infrastructure, and materials science.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Pacific Northwest National Laboratory<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is leading the effort, which brings together 14 partners, including nine universities and five national laboratories, and will feature scientists across multiple disciplines, ranging from energy systems to materials and computational chemistry. The five-year program includes funding support for three Hopkins principal investigators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t about solving one isolated problem. We\u2019re creating new algorithms and software tools that can address a wide host of challenges,\u201d says\u00a0<\/span>J\u00e1n Drgo\u0148a<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor of\u00a0<\/span>civil and systems engineering<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and a core researcher in the\u00a0<\/span>Ralph O\u2019Connor Sustainable Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(R0SEI). \u201cThis work builds upon Hopkins\u2019 leadership at the touchpoint of AI and sustainable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with Drgo\u0148a, the\u00a0<\/span>Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Enrique Mallada<\/strong><\/a>, an associate professor and associate researcher with ROSEI, and\u00a0<\/span>Mahyar Fazlyab<\/strong><\/a>, an assistant professor, will lead the Control of Physical Systems efforts, which explores how data-driven AI models and physics-based models can be combined to optimize complex systems.<\/p>\n
