{"id":13455,"date":"2017-08-09T11:00:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T15:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/?p=24303"},"modified":"2017-08-09T11:00:57","modified_gmt":"2017-08-09T15:00:57","slug":"bat-navigation-brain-science","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/news\/bat-navigation-brain-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Johns Hopkins team gets $1M grant to explore intricacies of bat navigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_24307\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24307\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24307\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/moss080917.jpg\" alt=\"Cynthia Moss\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cynthia Moss, a professor in Johns Hopkins University&#8217;s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, studies the mechanisms of spatial perception, attention, learning, and memory.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A team of Johns Hopkins University neuroscientists and engineers has <a href=\"https:\/\/nsf.gov\/news\/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=242719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won one of 19 National Science Foundation awards<\/a> intended for research that uses cross-disciplinary approaches to &#8220;push the frontiers of brain science.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Researchers will use the $1 million, four-year grant to attempt to determine how free-flying echolocating bats process sound to navigate their environment.<\/p>\n<p>The research team includes <a href=\"http:\/\/pbs.jhu.edu\/directory\/cynthia-moss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cynthia Moss<\/a>, a neuroscientist in the <a href=\"http:\/\/pbs.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences<\/a> who studies bats; <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\/faculty\/rajat-mittal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rajat Mittal<\/a>, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/me.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/faculty\/elhilali-mounya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mounya Elhilali<\/a>, an associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a> who studies how the brain processes sound; and Susanne Sterbing-D&#8217;Angelo, an assistant research professor who works with Moss in the bat lab.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are bringing together our expertise to pursue what we believe is a novel and exciting project,&#8221; Moss said. &#8220;At any given moment we&#8217;re hearing all sorts of things\u2014people talking, animals making noise, traffic\u2014and we have to make sense of it. Because bats rely so heavily on sound to guide their behavior, they are a good model to figure out how all animals use sound to guide behavior.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the team will study how the bat brain processes sound information to guide flight navigation.
