{"id":4427,"date":"2024-11-05T13:28:17","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T18:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/doctor-of-engineering\/faculty\/jonah-erlebacher\/"},"modified":"2024-11-05T13:28:17","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T18:28:17","slug":"jonah-erlebacher","status":"publish","type":"people","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/doctor-of-engineering\/faculty\/jonah-erlebacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonah Erlebacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jonah Erlebacher, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is recognized for his advances in materials for energy technologies, computational materials science, and new methods for the manufacturing of nanostructured metals.\u00a0Erlebacher joined the faculty of the Whiting School in 2000 and also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering for which he\u00a0<span>served as department chair from 2014 to 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Erlebacher\u2019s current research interests include developing methods for deep decarbonization of energy technology by transforming small molecules like methane and carbon dioxide to solid carbon, and upgrading the often low-value carbon to high-value products such as fiber, structural carbon, and biochar, permanently and safely sequestering carbon (see <a href=\"http:\/\/energyinstitute.jhu.edu\">energyinstitute.jhu.edu<\/a>); exploration of novel chemical pathways to produce hydrogen that are energy effective and scalable by using experiments, process modeling, computational fluid dynamics, and building prototype reactor systems; and making and studying novel metal coatings that are simultaneously highly corrosion- and mechanical fatigue-resistant, \u00a0\u00a0including approaches from experimental synthesis to advanced multi-scale modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Erlebacher\u00a0<span>and his group members hold multiple <\/span> patents for processes encompassing the creation of nanoporous gold leaf, advanced fuel cell catalysts, and methane decomposition to hydrogen and solid carbon. He has also developed computer models to model the morphological evolution of nanostructured materials over time.<\/p>\n<div><span>His numerous awards include the Johns Hopkins University Inaugural Gordon Croft Investment Faculty Scholar, the JHU William H. Huggins Excellence in Teaching Award, Whiting School of Engineering, and a 2001 National Science Foundation CAREER Faculty Young Investigator Award. Widely published, he is also a sought-after presenter at academic, industry, and government seminars around the world. He is a member of the Materials Research Society, the Electrochemical Society, TMS, and the\u00a0American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Until recently, he served on the American Chemical Society Committee on the Petroleum Research Fund and was meeting chair for the 2019 International Materials Research Congress in Cancun, Mexico. In addition to past service as associate editor of the <em>Journal of the Electrochemical Society<\/em>, he has led or co-led several conferences, among them the \u201cEmerging Methods of Synthesis at all Length Scales,\u201d for the Department of Energy\u2019s 2016 Basic Research Needs Workshop on Synthesis, International Symposia on Nanoporosity Formation by Alloy Corrosion (2016 and 2017), and chaired the 2009 Gordon Research Conference on Thin Film and Crystal Growth Mechanisms.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Erlebacher holds a BS in physics and history of art, summa cum laude, from Yale University (1991), and a PhD in applied physics from Harvard University (1999).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-4427","people","type-people","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
