Patients must visit the doctor to undergo an unpleasant throat swab test, then make an additional trip to a pharmacy to fill an antibiotic prescription\u2014all while feeling sick.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemical and biomolecular engineering students<\/a>&nbsp;at Johns Hopkins&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whiting School of Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;is working on a novel product concept: simply gargle with saline, spit the solution into a container, and dip a test strip into the tube. Presto! A result in fewer than 20 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThink about how easy it is to test for COVID-19 these days and apply that to strep throat,\u201d&nbsp;said Alex Snyder, who worked on the project with Joseph Kim, Yuseong (Nick) Oh, and Gabriele Pierre for their engineering senior design project. \u201cThat was our thinking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student team developed the concept for its Product Design class and will present its theoretical approach at the Whiting School of Engineering\u2019s annual&nbsp;Design Day&nbsp;on May 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The keys to the student team\u2019s approach are components designed to make home testing easy, straightforward, and fast.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPatients will gargle a saline solution and spit into a collection tube containing a special polymer that rapidly expands as it absorbs water, while leaving larger particles like strep bacteria to concentrate at the top,\u201d said Oh. \u201cNext, a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) strip is inserted into the tube\u2019s concentrated solution.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StrepCheck\u2019s LFIA strip includes antibodies and reagents that bind to strep bacteria to show a visible test line, similar to a rapid COVID-19 test. (StrepCheck also includes a control line to confirm that the test is functioning correctly.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe proposed components of our test strip are based on existing strip technologies from multiple strip tests but optimized for our product\u2019s specifications,\u201d said team member Kim. \u201cThis includes a nitrocellulose membrane and strep antibodies with conjugated colloidal gold particles.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further enhance StrepCheck\u2019s detection accuracy, the group proposes an app that that would be used scan the LFIA strip after immersion in the concentrated solution. They say that this digital tool would enhance their product\u2019s accuracy by making it 1,000 times more sensitive to the presence of strep antigens than other rapid strep tests on the market, which also require healthcare professionals to administer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student\u2019s advisor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty\/david-gracias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Gracias<\/a>, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, praised the team\u2019s conceptual approach to solving a difficult problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeveloping at-home diagnostic tests for common infections can improve health outcomes while also saving time and money and this is the major engineering challenge being addressed here.&nbsp; The students did well in thinking about all the critical elements right from sample acquisition to pathogen concentration and finally testing and analysis,\u201d he said.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons has-custom-font-size has-medium-font-size is-content-justification-right is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-d445cf74 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill dd-news-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-custom-002-d-72-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/news\/an-ai-that-really-cares-about-the-big-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more at WSE News<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chemical and biomolecular engineering team develops novel rapid test concept.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":32,"featured_media":5561,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_eb_attr":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[11,14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-design-day-news","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
