{"id":14313,"date":"2026-04-13T13:18:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T17:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/designcenter\/?p=14313"},"modified":"2026-04-23T11:48:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:48:59","slug":"pace-perfect-a-student-built-marathon-optimization-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/designcenter\/2026\/04\/13\/pace-perfect-a-student-built-marathon-optimization-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Pace perfect: A student-built marathon optimization platform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-contrast-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4612661f86f01accfe67f94b78c1ea2e\">Author: Jaimie Patterson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by their own runs on the university\u2019s track and cross country teams, Johns Hopkins seniors Mirra Klimov and Matthew Kelly have developed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sydneymarathonpacing.isi.jhu.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free marathon pacing tool<\/a>&nbsp;that runners around the world can use to get a competitive edge in the upcoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldmarathonmajors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbott World Marathon Majors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Available to all, the tool features personalized recommendations for pacing each portion of a race based on a user\u2019s personal running style, data from past marathon finishers, and elevation changes\u2014plus maps, advice, and locations of water stations and turns for each interval of a particular course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe began this project with the 2025 Sydney Marathon,\u201d explains Klimov. \u201cIt was added last year to the Abbot World Majors\u2014previously a series of six of the world\u2019s largest and most prestigious marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City\u2014creating a great influx of new runners unsure how to pace the course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike other pacing apps on the market, the group\u2019s tool utilizes each marathon\u2019s unique elevation profile to calculate splits, or the time taken to complete a specific segment of a race, plus&nbsp;tens of thousands of runners\u2019 race results from past races. The tool also provides visuals of each race segment with a mile by mile (or kilometer by kilometer) breakdown, a notecard of helpful information about the course, and the option to export a runner\u2019s personalized strategy as a pace band\u2014a wristband that lists target times to help marathoners maintain a specific pace and achieve a particular finish time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no tool that does&nbsp;<em>everything<\/em>&nbsp;that our tool does\u2014and especially none that do it for free!\u201d Klimov says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of the school year, the development team has grown to include computer science majors Radomyr Couture, Sahana Sanjeev, and Lamine Niang, all members of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sports-analytics.cs.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Johns Hopkins Sports Analytics Research Group<\/a>. The students are advised by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.jhu.edu\/faculty\/anton-dahbura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anton Dahbura<\/a>, the research group\u2019s director, and alumnus&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2023\/06\/08\/ai-hockey-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tad Berkery<\/a>, Engr \u201924 (BS\/MSE), now a research program coordinator for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team has also greatly expanded its tool, accommodating additional marathons including Tokyo, New York City, Boston, and London, as well as including detailed data on its methodology and helpful insights from past marathons, such as how each pacing strategy performed, challenges the marathoners faced in terms of weather or terrain, and improvements made on the course as compared to previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To gauge interest with runners in the international marathoning community, the team solicited feedback from Facebook groups and Reddit threads dedicated to preparing for the upcoming Abbott World Majors\u2014which is how they connected with Australian runner Alexis Dean, who used their tool for the 2025 Sydney Marathon, her fifth marathon ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was preparing, I found it challenging to come up with my own pacing plan because of the hilly course\u2014especially using kilometer splits\u2014so the tool was very helpful,\u201d she says. \u201cI liked that you could choose different pacing strategies and I ran through a few different options to see which I felt most comfortable with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dean began the race confident of the pace she wanted to run for each part of the race, and achieved a time of 3:08:47\u201413 seconds under her goal of 3:09, landing her in the top 1% of all women finishers in that marathon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was so happy and proud, and the pacing tool definitely contributed to this result!\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her time qualified her for the 2026 Boston Marathon, taking place Monday, April 20. Dean plans to use the tool\u2019s new Boston pacing module to help her prepare: \u201cBoston is another hilly course and I\u2019m not familiar with it at all.
