Currently, the manual kit assembly and packaging process for the FutureMakers STEM learning kits is a human-operated process characterized by specific movements such as stacking, picking, sorting, and plastic bag manipulation. Furthermore, there exists a cognitive element within the assembly process, as there is a requirement for color coordination, counting, and quality control assurance from the operator.
\nThese physical dexterity and cognitive driven tasks lead to inconsistencies in product throughput and a substantial risk for undercounts within their individual kits. The project aims to relieve ergonomic strain and cognitive load for inhouse operators while delivering quality control and increased production. We present two solutions: an AI motion tracking system that verifies operators have removed parts from each bin, and a suction driven bag opener to assist in the tedious task of opening the ziplock bags that hold the kits.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n Designing an Interlocking Biodegradable Drug-eluting Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device<\/a>

This project designs and develops an interlocking biodegradable drug-eluting left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion device to reduce stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. Current devices are permanent and can result in incomplete sealing, long-term complications, and the need for secondary procedures. Our design introduces an interlocking \u201cseal-and-heal\u201d mechanism using a polycaprolactone-based formulation that mechanically seals the appendage while slowly releasing paclitaxel to locally inhibit fibrosis and promote controlled healing, which enables sustained therapeutic delivery while minimizing systemic exposure. A computational model predicts degrdation, molecular weight loss, and structural integrity as a function of geometry and material properties. A scalable and solvent-free manufacturing method via melt compounding and injection molding is proposed as a high-throughput and low-cost production method.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n Lakeland Park Trail Design: A Safe And Functional Approach<\/a>

Consisting of 33 steps, a swale, and woodchip landings, this proposal spans the 40\u2019 long and 19\u2019 high hill with a set of steps that meets the clients\u2019 objectives. The steps will be separated by wooden slabs that create 7\u2033 risers. The risers will be reinforced by 24\u201d long stakes at either end, ensuring durability. Steps will have a tread depth of 14.5\u201d and a width of 54\u201d, allowing multiple individuals to access them at the same time. Our design addresses erosion as each step will have a slight slope, ensuring water flows away from the stairs and into a swale dug into the hillside. Furthermore, the tread of each stair will be compacted with woodchips, ensuring safe passage even in wet conditions. Through prioritizing safety and durability, our proposed design allows for functional use of the Lakeland Park trail, while maintaining the natural aesthetic the local community desires.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n Automatic Pneumatic Pressure Balancing Saddle Pad for Equine Back Health\u00a0<\/a>

SaddleReady is a proactive, data-driven saddle pad designed to prevent equine injuries. It integrates an array of inflatable and deflatable silicone pads with thin-film pressure sensors to capture high-resolution pressure maps and enable precise, localized adjustments at each independent pad.
\nBeyond its physical functionality, SaddleReady includes a streamlined mobile app that presents pressure data clearly and intuitively. Users can calibrate, save, and reuse saddle configurations for different horses and riders, enabling consistent and personalized fit across rides. Internally, communication between pad arrays and control units is handled via I2C, while real-time data is transmitted to the user interface over Bluetooth.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

It is wonderful to watch students from different departments work together to support better engineering design opportunities at Hopkins.<\/p>\n
