{"id":37,"date":"2022-07-15T12:56:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T16:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.framework.local\/academics\/magna-parturient\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T15:07:03","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T20:07:03","slug":"undergraduate-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/academics\/undergraduate-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering\u2019s undergraduate program provides a diverse and supportive environment, focused on educating innovative and fundamentally-grounded engineers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By fusing core chemical engineering principles with emerging disciplines, our undergraduates innovate new technologies and spur cross-disciplinary scientific discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the option to concentrate in Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering or Interfaces and Nanotechnology, students can tailor their studies to suit their interests, contribute to the creation of knowledge through unparalleled research opportunities, and graduate with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to pursue their professional goals, no matter what path they may choose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our graduates take a myriad paths&#8211;working in the pharmaceutical and energy industries and finance, launching their own startups, or pursuing further studies in a variety of engineering fields, as well as in medicine, law, and business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Questions about our undergraduate academic programs?<\/h2>\n<p>Director of Undergraduate Studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/faculty\/lilian-lam-josephson\/\">Lilian Lam Josephson<\/a><br \/>\nUndergraduate Academic Program Administrator, <a href=\"mailto:sonnenberg@jhu.edu\">Drew Sonnenberg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The undergraduate curriculum in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering includes options for different tracks of study and provides students with foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Our academic offerings are strengthened through research experiences that enable students to work closely with renowned engineers and scientists&#8211;at the School of Engineering, as well as with faculty and researchers at Johns Hopkins\u2019 schools of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/som\/\">Medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhuapl.edu\/\">Applied Physics Laboratory<\/a>. Undergraduates also benefit from our faculty members\u2019 affiliations with major centers and institutes, such as the<a href=\"http:\/\/inbt.jhu.edu\/\"> Institute for NanoBioTechnology<\/a>, where students contribute to research advances in fields ranging from drug delivery and nanotechnology to alternative energy and cancer research.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is designed to be completed in four years, and students who plan carefully and\/or use Advanced Placement credits can have the flexibility to pursue double majors and\/or minors, <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/student-life\/opportunities-abroad\/\">study abroad<\/a>, and tailor their studies to their interests and needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Tracks of Study<\/h2>\n<p>Undergraduates can develop more in-depth expertise by selecting to specialize in one of the following areas in chemical and biomolecular engineering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (MCB)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Interfaces and Nanotechnology (IN)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Data Science and Machine Learning (DSML)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Advising Manuals<\/h2>\n<p>Beginning Fall 2024, we are phasing out the Undergraduate Advising Manual.
