{"id":9742,"date":"2017-02-22T11:30:37","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T16:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/?p=9742"},"modified":"2021-12-02T11:29:37","modified_gmt":"2021-12-02T16:29:37","slug":"bryan-benson-10-b-s-chemical-and-biomolecular-engineering","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/news\/bryan-benson-10-b-s-chemical-and-biomolecular-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"Using research to break the mold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Benson, &#8217;10 BS kicked off his research career the moment he walked into the lab on the first day of his freshman year, and hasn\u2019t slowed down since.<\/p>\n<p>Since graduating from Johns Hopkins with a bachelor\u2019s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering in 2010, Benson has earned a PhD in chemical and biological engineering at Princeton, had three children, and accepted a position as research engineer at Solvay Specialty Polymers in Alpharetta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t normal to join a lab that early,\u201d Benson acknowledged, \u201cbut I used the opportunity to make my formal education better because I related the lab work to what I was doing in class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-36826\" src=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Benson-Family-pic-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Benson-Family-pic-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Benson-Family-pic.jpg 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/>Benson, who was the first in his family to go to college, got interested in microsystems during a presentation he attended on a visit to Hopkins. Exchanging the time he\u2019d spent playing varsity sports in high school for 20- to 30-hour weeks in the lab, he\u2019d embarked on his first research paper by the end of his first year, received a Provost\u2019s Undergraduate Research Award to continue his research over the summer, and went on to win several fellowships that helped support his education.<\/p>\n<p>He graduated as co-author of five papers and recipient of a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship, which he used to attend Princeton. Since January 2016, he\u2019s been doing process research for high-performance polymers at Solvay, where he says he relies on his background in microfluidics and translation from bench to scale.<\/p>\n<p>The ChemBE lab\u2019s mindset has followed him, too, as his lab mentors supported his pattern of breaking the mold.
