{"id":53030,"date":"2026-05-20T17:25:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/?post_type=news&#038;p=53030"},"modified":"2026-05-20T17:25:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:25:50","slug":"nsf-grfp-2026","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/chembe\/news\/nsf-grfp-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Promising Student Research Selected for Prestigious Fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students working on research with high future potential\u2014from microbes to new HIV treatments\u2014were\u00a0awarded 2026\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/opportunities\/grfp-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship-program\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NSF Graduate Research Fellowships<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The awards are among some of the nation&#8217;s most prestigious fellowships, providing financial support to graduate students who have\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0potential for significant achievements in research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among the 2,500 recipients are six chemical and biomolecular engineering students:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lavanya Gupta<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0graduated\u00a0with the class of 2026. At Johns Hopkins,\u00a0she\u00a0conducted research in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yayuanliu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yayuan Liu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0lab on using renewable energy to convert common substances, such as water and carbon dioxide into fuels,\u00a0fertilizers\u00a0and other products. She will be pursuing a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nicole Korinetz<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0graduated in 2025 and is currently\u00a0pursuing a PhD in molecular engineering at the University of Chicago.\u00a0Her research at Johns Hopkins focused on developing polymer-based nanoparticles to deliver tiny bits of DNA instructions\u2014housed in mRNA particles\u2014to other cells to treat disease.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Felicity (Songman) Li<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0graduated in 2024 and is currently employed by Genentech in their Process Development Rotation Program learning how to develop safe and effective medicines. At Johns Hopkins, Li worked in the laboratory of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barman.wse.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ishan Barman<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who studies new methods for imaging biological targets in the lab and in the body, aiming to improve disease diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Melina Mohammadi\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">graduated\u00a0with the class of 2026.\u00a0Equal parts engineer and microbe enthusiast, Mohammadi\u2019s passion for phage therapy inspired the development of\u00a0DentiPhage, an award-winning project that uses bacteriophages to target oral biofilms. She hopes to continue researching microbial therapeutics and the potential of phage-based medicine to address antibiotic-resistant infections. Mohammadi will begin her PhD program in Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Claire Sklar<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0graduated with the class of 2026. Sklar studied in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.jh.edu\/cui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Honggang Cui\u2019s laboratory<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, developing targeted drugs for long-acting injectable treatment of HIV. After graduating with both a BS and MSE in chemical and biomolecular engineering, she is pursuing her PhD in chemical engineering at MIT.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Evan Wang\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">graduated with the class of 2026. Wang conducted research in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maogroup.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hai-Quan Mao<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s lab, focusing on biomaterials for regenerative therapy and drug delivery. He will be attending Columbia University to pursue a PhD in biomedical engineering.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recipients were selected based on\u00a0merit\u00a0and broader impact of their research, including the potential to contribute to scientific innovation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-53030","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","news_categories-awards-and-honors","news_categories-students"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
