{"id":1306,"date":"2021-06-21T16:07:30","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T20:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/case\/faculty\/michael-shields\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T16:19:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:19:53","slug":"michael-shields","status":"publish","type":"people","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/case\/faculty\/michael-shields\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Shields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Shields is a professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering, holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is a fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hemi.jhu.edu\/\">Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute<\/a>, and a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.jhu.edu\/\">Data Science and AI Institute<\/a>. He is currently the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hemi.jhu.edu\/ht-max\/\">Center on High-Throughput Materials Discovery for Extremes<\/a>\u00a0and a member of the leadership team for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hemi.jhu.edu\/caimee\/\">Center on Artificial Intelligence for Materials in Extreme Environments<\/a>. He is also the past chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/faculty-staff\/engineering-faculty-senate\/\">Whiting School of Engineering Faculty Senate<\/a>, serving from 2023 to 2025, and is an Ivy+ Provost Leadership Fellow.<\/p>\n<p>His research focuses on uncertainty quantification for wide-ranging problems in computational mechanics and computational materials science. His group, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/surg.engineering.jhu.edu\/\">Shields Uncertainty Research Group<\/a>, or SURG, conducts research in uncertainty quantification, machine learning, and stochastic methods to better understand the effects of uncertainties and random variations on the performance of materials and structures. This research can be applied to improve the reliability of structures and materials during extreme events such as fires, earthquakes, high winds, shock, blasts, and impacts by enabling more accurate and informative structural and material modeling. Shields\u2019 work primarily focuses on problems where computational efficiency is critical and the behavior of the system is highly unpredictable, such as in civil structures, aircraft, ships, automobiles, and spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>SURG develops the open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/uqpyproject.readthedocs.io\/en\/latest\/\">UQPy<\/a> (Uncertainty Quantification with Python) software package for modeling uncertainty in the simulation of physical and mathematical systems. This novel tool was designed to aid computational analyses using numerical, statistical, and machine learning approaches, such as polynomial chaos expansions, Gaussian process regression, neural networks and Monte Carlo method.<\/p>\n<p>Shields research has received funding from the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Army Research Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute. He is a recipient of the 2025 Early Achievement Research Award from the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability. He also received the Department of Energy Early Career Award, NSF CAREER Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, IASSAR Early Achievement Award, the Johns Hopkins University Catalyst Award, an ONR Summer Faculty Research Fellowship, and an NSF\/ASEE Corporate Research Postdoctoral Fellowship. Since 2011, he has had more than 80 papers published in peer reviewed academic journals.<\/p>\n<p>He is an active member of several professional organizations. He is the chair of the Machine Learning in Mechanics Committee for the Engineering Mechanics Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and serves as the Vice Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usacm.org\/site_page.cfm?pk_association_webpage_menu=11354&amp;pk_association_webpage=25785\">Uncertainty Quantification and Probabilistic Modeling Technical Thrust Area<\/a>\u00a0for the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics. Shields is also a member of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, International Civil Engineering Risk and Reliability Association, and International Association on Structural Safety and Reliability.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, Shields received dual bachelor\u2019s degrees in physics (with honors) from Loyola University Chicago and civil engineering from Columbia University. He completed his PhD in civil engineering and engineering mechanics at Columbia University in 2010. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins in 2013, he was a research engineer in the Applied Science and Investigations group at Weidlinger Associates, Inc.
