Despite these advances, 3D printing methods still face significant constraints when it comes to material diversity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c3D printing techniques are often restricted to specific materials like UV-curable polymers, thermoplastics, or particular alloys,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/case\/faculty\/jochen-mueller\/\"><span>Jochen Mueller<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant professor in the Whiting School of Engineering\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/case\/\"><span>Department of Civil and Systems Engineering<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at Johns Hopkins University. \u201cBut there is one major exception\u2014Material Extrusion 3D printing. Material Extrusion currently offers the broadest range of materials options, from polymers to metals to ceramics, and can even combine them in a single print. This is made possible by advances in printhead technology, which are the most critical component of multimaterial extrusion 3D printing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a new review published this month in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rdcu.be\/em9Ro\"><span><i>Nature <\/i><i>Reviews Materials<\/i><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Mueller and co-authors, doctoral candidates Nathan Brown and Daniel Ames, offer a comprehensive overview of the rapid evolution of this field.
