Michael Shields was promoted to Associate Professor in early 2020. Shields is an expert on uncertainty quantification for wide-ranging problems in computational mechanics and computational materials science.<\/p>\n

His group, the Shields Uncertainty Research Group (SURG)<\/a>, conducts methodological research in uncertainty quantification, machine learning, and stochastic methods to better understand the effects of uncertainties and random variations on the performance of materials and structures.<\/p>\n

The group recently launched the open-source UQpy<\/a> (Uncertainty Quantification with Python) software package for modeling uncertainty in the simulation of physical and mathematical systems. This novel tool was designed to aid computational analyses using numerical and statistically based approaches, such as stochastic collocation and Monte Carlo sampling.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> Ben Schafer, CaSE professor and director of the Cold-Formed Steel Research Consortium<\/a>, on his election as a Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Fellow<\/a>. Schafer is one of the world\u2019s leading experts on structures designed from steel, and his research focuses on increasing the efficiency and safety of steel buildings \u2013 particularly under extreme hazards.<\/p>\n

A division of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the SEI aims to improve professional practice, spark technological advancement, and promote members\u2019 careers.<\/p>\n

Somnath Ghosh, the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering, was recently named as the recipient of the 2020 International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) Computational Mechanics Award<\/a>, which is conferred every two years to honor exceptional accomplishments in computational mechanics.<\/p>\n

Somnath\u2019s research focuses on computational mechanics modeling, particularly multi-scale structure-materials analysis and simulations, multi-physics modeling and simulation of multi-functional materials, materials characterization, process modeling, and emerging fields like Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME).<\/p>\n
