The lecture, “A Random Walk through Mathematics and Life at Hopkins,” will be held at\u00a04:30 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday, Feb. 9\u00a0<\/strong>in the Glass Pavilion. <\/strong>Registration is required.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0livestream will be available on the\u00a0<\/span>Johns Hopkins Engineering YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0for those who cannot attend in person.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Wierman<\/a>, professor of applied mathematics and statistics, served as department chair from 1998 to 2000. He was the founder and director of Johns Hopkins\u2019 W.P. Carey Entrepreneurship and Management Program, director of Johns Hopkins\u2019 Professional Communications Program, director of Johns Hopkins\u2019 Center for Leadership Education, and designer of the Master of Science in Engineering Management program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Description of “A Random Walk through Mathematics\u00a0and Life at Hopkins”:\u00a0As an applied mathematician who focuses on problem-solving, Wierman has conducted research on a wide variety of topics involving probability, stochastic processes, and discrete mathematics. His one career-long research obsession has been percolation theory, a random graph model for phase transitions and critical phenomena. The talk will mention a small sample of other research topics, particularly those with interesting stories. He will also highlight several non-research activities at Hopkins and plans for continued involvement.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
