Goldman Lecture Series \u2013 \u00a0Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tree decompositions are a powerful tool in both structural graph theory and graph algorithms. Many hard problems become tractable if the input graph is known to have a tree decomposition of bounded \u201cwidth\u201d. Exhibiting a particular kind of\u00a0a tree\u00a0decomposition is also a useful way to describe the structure of a graph.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span>Tree decompositions\u00a0have traditionally\u00a0been used in the context of forbidden graph minors;\u00a0bringing\u00a0them into the realm\u00a0of forbidden\u00a0induced subgraphs has until recently remained out of reach. Over the last couple of\u00a0years,\u00a0we have made significant progress in this direction, exploring both the classical notion of bounded tree-width, and concepts of more structural flavor.
