{"id":42074,"date":"2022-07-29T13:33:02","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T17:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/?post_type=news&#038;p=42074"},"modified":"2022-08-03T09:24:18","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T13:24:18","slug":"department-co-sponsors-data-science-for-democracy-workshop","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/news\/department-co-sponsors-data-science-for-democracy-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Department co-sponsors \u201cData Science for Democracy\u201d workshop \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The two-week workshop, held in June, was led by Fadil Santosa, professor and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.jhu.edu\/ams\/faculty\/fadil-santosa\/\">Yu Wu and Chaomei Chen Head of AMS<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/snfagora.jhu.edu\/person\/bryce-corrigan\/\">Bryce Corrigan, SNF Agora Institute senior statistician and lecturer.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>One of our goals in holding this workshop was to demonstrate how data science<\/span> <span>\u202fcan be a tool for good in our democracy, from shedding light on social and economic inequities to providing information to improve civic engagement and more\u201d <\/span><span>s<\/span><span>aid\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Santosa.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Undergraduates and graduate students from Texas, Georgia, <\/span><span>Rhode Island,<\/span><span> Pennsylvania<\/span><span>, New Hampshire,<\/span><span> Tenness<\/span><span>e<\/span><span>e, Missouri,<\/span><span> Ohio,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Utah, Michigan, and Maryland formed four teams, each charged with using data science techniques to address a topic relevant to democracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One group tackled the issue of gerrymandering, developing an algorithm <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to determine if voting district lines are fair in Colorado and Ohio. Another explored <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">why specific populations<\/span><span> in the U.S.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> choose not to vaccinate against COVID-19. A\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">civic engagement portion focused on how to measure citizen participation among youth and nurture their involvement, and another team d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iscussed challenges in transit equity by modeling the potential impact of Baltimore\u2019s proposed Red Line on job accessibility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Red Line is a proposed 14-mile east-west transit line that would connect the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County, communities in West Baltimore, downtown Baltimore, Inner Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton, and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan cancelled the project in 2015.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team assessing transit equity estimated the time it took to get from one census tract to another. Using this information, they calculated job accessibility, which identifies the number of available jobs in a single area. The transit team focused on people who live and work in Baltimore City, analyzing each potential transit stop, path, and the time it takes for a person on public transit to move from one station to the next. They found that transit time for city dwellers living within a 15-minute walking distance from each planned Red Line stop would be drastically reduced.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The transit team shared their methods and results with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moretransitequity.com\">Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition (BTEC,)<\/a> a community-led organization advocating for equal access to transit for riders across the Baltimore region.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/snfagora.jhu.edu\/event\/ams-data-science-for-democracy\/\">Data Science for Democracy<\/a> workshop applications have indicated how the benefits of the completion of the Red Line are more concrete and beneficial than previously projected, making our case for urgent investments in reduction of transportation sector pollution, it\u2019s adverse public health impacts, and in improved transit equity more persuasive with policymakers,\u201d said Samuel Jordan, president of BTEC.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
